"Improvising Music in the 15th and 16th Century:
Contrapunto alla Mente - Chant surle Livre - Madrigale Passaggiato"

In 2009 organiseerde het Orpheus Instituut zijn zevende editie van de ‘International Orpheus Academy for Music and Theory´.

Het thema van de Orpheus Academy 2009 was "Improvising Music in the 15th and 16th Century: Contrapunto alla Mente - Chant sur le Livre - Madrigale Passaggiato". Op het kruispunt tussen muzikale uitvoering, compositie en theorievorming vinden we historische improvisatiepraktijken die zich soepel en schijnbaar moeiteloos tussen deze muzikale domeinen bewegen. Nochtans vormt het vinden van een evenwicht tussen elementen uit deze expertisegebieden voor uitvoerders, theoretici en historici een bijzondere uitdaging waarbij rekening moet gehouden worden met de cultuurspecifieke eigenheden die verbonden zijn aan notatie, inventie, creatie, akoestiek, receptie, etc. Naar goede traditie ging een uitgelezen gastfaculteit deze uitdaging aan en daarmee werd een belangrijke stap gezet in de richting van een verdere ontwikkeling van het artistieke en theoretische discours omtrent de improvisatiecultuur in de 15de en 16de eeuw.

  2. Spiridionis "Nova Instructio": an original pedagogical approach to keyboard improvisation
  in the XVIIth century.

  1. Models for improvising the "contenance angloise" of the 15th century.
  2. Composing and improvising sound progressions around 1600.

  What does our knowledge about improvisation tell us about composition? How was the distinction between improvisation and composition articulated in the Renaissance?
