New music for children, incorporating the training of extended techniques into piano pedagogy. In an Orpheus Institute research project, pianist-researcher Luk Vaes and composer-teacher Hans Cafmeyer created new repertoire to be used by pre-conservatoire piano teachers. The first volume, comprising 11 pieces, is out and for sale!

Orpheus Doctoral Conference

Open for researchers, practitioners and doctoral students within music and related fields, the Orpheus Doctoral Conference 2017, Traditions-Transitions, will explore how different modes of relationships between past and present affect artistic practices today. Further, practitioners and researchers from the fields of music and social sciences will draw on Eric Hobsbawm’s notion of “invented traditions”, examining how traditions are forged, broken or interrupted and how they might be used as sources of renewal.

The conference will feature lectures by Richard TaruskinSigiswald Kuijken and Esteban Buch as well as a musical gallery with performances and installations.

The 14th International Orpheus Academy will explore the notion of the contemporary, particularly focusing on the futures of the contemporary. Following Roland Barthes’s claim – inspired by Nietzsche, and quoted by Agamben – that “the contemporary is the untimely”, the contemporary might also suggest artistic practices that run against their own time and epoch, implying specific forms of resistance. Beyond historicising frameworks, which futures are there for an untimely contemporary?

To this day, the debate on the contemporary remains largely theoretical. This Academy aims precisely at exploring, fostering, and propelling new modes of thinking the contemporary, focusing on music performance. Lectures by o.a. Babette Babich (USA), Chaya Czernowin (USA/Israel), Heiner Goebbels (D), Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf (D) and Peter Osborne (UK).

The philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and its resonating discourses have become increasingly relevant to the field of Artistic Research, and Deleuze is now a key reference for many artist-researchers engaging with knowledge across artistic, academic and non-academic fields of practice. DARE 2015: The Dark Precursor was the first conference attempting to trace the encounter between artistic research and Deleuze’s world. The Second International Conference on Deleuze and Artistic Research, DARE 2017: Aberrant Nuptials, continues that mapping, readdressing the question ‘How can communication occur between heterogeneous systems?’ through the associated concepts of ‘aberrant nuptials’ and ‘zone of indeterminacy’.

Submissions are now closed, but late applications will be considered for as long as possible.
