Aberrant Nuptials

2nd International Conference on Deleuze & Artistic Research

20 - 22 November 2017

The philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and its resonating discourses have become increasingly relevant to the field of Artistic Research, and Deleuze is now a key reference for many artist-researchers engaging with knowledge across artistic, academic and non-academic fields of practice. DARE 2015: The Dark Precursor was the first conference attempting to trace the encounter between artistic research and Deleuze’s world. The Second International Conference on Deleuze and Artistic Research, DARE 2017: Aberrant Nuptials, continues that mapping, readdressing the question ‘How can communication occur between heterogeneous systems?’ through the associated concepts of ‘aberrant nuptials’ and ‘zone of indeterminacy’.

Orpheus Open Circuit

Sunday September 3, 2017 (13 - 18)

Orpheus Open Circuit celebrates the start of the new season. On Sunday September 3 the Orpheus Institute opens its doors for a late summer’s afternoon of new live electronic music. Composers, sound artists and improvisers – gathered under the research cluster Music, Thought and Technology – present new work that engages, challenges and fascinates. They are joined by artists from the Orpheus Electric Salon in a programme of performances, installations and public interventions.

We all now inhabit a common technological world. Come and join the Orpheus Open Circuit as we imagine how it is changing the way we all think about making and understanding music.

Rethinking the Practices of Music

Orpheus Instituut celebrates its 20th anniversary

14 November 2016

2016-2017 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Orpheus Institute. We will celebrate this occasion with forty-eight hours of music, discussion and festivity to take place in Ghent from the afternoon of Sunday 13 November to the morning of Tuesday 15, 2016.

On Monday five Orpheus research groups present their work in a series of musical events. The common thread is their constant re-examining of the relationship between artistic activity and research. These artistic presentations are therefore interspersed with two panel discussions confronting questions raised by this generational moment. Experts in the field discuss present and future challenges for artistic research in music with researchers from the Orpheus Institute and our guests:

Being Inside: As artistic research in music is acknowledged as an actor, as a valid mode of knowledge production, how does it negotiate relationships with disciplines, with bodies of theory and with institutions? Are there new responsibilities?

Staying outside: As a new research ethos, early work in artistic research could claim a radical stance, a position outside. As an emerging activity it accumulates practice, theory and history. How does it learn and develop while maintaining a critical edge? Is artistic research inherently a discipline of resistance, and how can that be sustained?

VERBEELDE KLANKRUIMTES 2014

February 27 - October 1st, 2014

Sound artist Kurt Du Tré and photographer Marc De Blieck start a ‘work-in-progress’ at the Orpheus Institute. The grand red wall of the Institute’s majestic building serves as a playing field for both artists. A silent photo and an audiotape at rest are the first objects of an improvisation on the theme of the house where they are invited as guests. The work-in- progress is hereby initiated and will grow and culminate to its final form and destination in the fall (October 2014).
