The joint forces of eight major higher education institutions in three European countries lead to a groundbreaking initiative at level of doctoral studies in European higher music education.
Together forming the DOCUMA alliance, this group of institutions developed the first joint European doctoral curriculum in musical arts under the coordination and incentive of Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Belgium.
This cutting-edge new curriculum allows intellectual challenges, artistic creativity and professional development within a research environment that carries the benefits of eight higher education institutions:
• an innovative and dynamic environment for practice-based research
• unprecedented access to a wide range of research and performing resources
• involvement in a unique international network and forum of leading performers, composers and scolars
• a Europe-wide team of supervisors covering a diverse range of musical specialisms
• an international community of students and staff from a rich variety of musical backgrounds
• an exciting joint international seminars, workshops, colloquia and other events
The development of this European doctoral curriculum in musical arts was made possible through funding by the European Commission under the Erasmus programme (Curriculum Development projects), from October 2006 until September 2009.
Starting September 2008 this new curriculum ran at :
- Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Belgium
- Royal College of Music in London, U.K
Since September 2009, the curriculum runs at the Orpheus Institute and is now called docARTES. More concrete information on the Doctoral Programme in Musical Arts can be found on the website www.docartes.be.
